BENEFITING: GLOBAL ABILITIES FOUNDATION
For a while now, some of my very talented friends (Chris-Anne Correa and Victoria Scalfari) have been running, and not just running around the park....doing 10 mile runs, half marathons, and multiple marathons! They're basically superheroes. They inspired me to start running more, which led to a couple 5ks, then a 10 mile bike ride, and now all of a sudden I'm signed up for the Iron Girl Sprint Triathalon in August!
As we have been training for these races, we all realized it would be a great opportunity to not only give ourselves the gift of better health and fun medals, but to also give back to the community! With that in mind, we started brainstorming what cause we would like to bring awareness to. Last fall, Chris and I volunteered at the Baltimore RecFest, which is the Global Abilities Organization's annual festival! It's where people of all ages, backgrounds, and level of abilities come together and play sports, eat some good food, learn about resources, make new friends, and more!
This is their mission statement:The Global Abilities Foundation (GAF) seeks to increase cultural understanding and provide resources to help persons with disabilities become independent productive members of society across the globe. By providing education, assistive technology and adaptive tools, and instilling motivation by focusing on ability rather that disability, we empower individuals to excel in school, work, and social life.
We believe that we all have ability inside us, and by focusing on our abilities, we can achieve great things.
Here's their website for more information on how to volunteer, donate, etc: www.globalabilities.org
So, as we are running, swimming, and biking, we'd like to put those miles to good use, hence our campaign name; Moving for Miles!
When you total all the miles between the three of us (and some friends along the way) we got a whopping 184.12 miles! We'd like to raise $10 for every mile, giving us a beautiful donation of $1,841.2!!!
Whatever you can donate will help, and if nothing else, please check out their website and volunteer at one of their many events, if you can!
Let's start Moving for Miles!
