Please visit www.moyo.life for details.
Heart disease is no longer just a problem of affluent countries, in developing nations, it causes twice as many deaths as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis combined [Gaziano et al, Circulation 2005, and Lopez et al, Oxford University Press and World Bank 2006]. Furthermore, Africa has one of the highest prevalence of heart disease in children and young adults including congenital heart disease and rheumatic heart disease [Zuhlke et al, Heart 2013].
The non-profit Moyo.Life [www.moyo.life] in association with the UK based organization Chain of Hope headed by Sir Dr. Magdi Yacoub is organizing a medical mission to the Cardiac Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where we will be performing cardiac surgeries and percutaneous interventions free of charge for Ethiopian children and adults with congenital heart disease and rheumatic heart disease who otherwise would not be able to afford or have access to such services.
We are raising money to help fund this volunteer medical mission. Specifically to fund:
1) The travel expenses of the cardiac team of ICU, cath lab and OR technicians and nurses, cardiac sonographers, cardiothoracic surgeons, and interventional cardiologists to the Cardiac Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia who are volunteering during their allotted vacation time to Ethiopia to help perform lifesaving procedures on a rapidly growing long list of patients in need, in addition to training the local staff so that the Ethiopian physicians, nurses, and technicians can eventually perform all such procedures and surgeries fully independently.
2) Shipping expenses of essential catheterization lab and operating room equipment including catheters, valves, and closure devices.
