THE STORY:

In the summer of 2009, I found myself working at backpacking-based summer camp in Durango Colorado. That summer and the two following drastically changed the trajectory of my life.

Since that fateful summer, and a degree in Outdoor Education later, I have found my niche as the Program Director at a small organization with a big mission. It is through MPEC's Earth Studies Program that I am lucky enough to get the opportunity work with an incredible team, as we strive to inspire students to become critical thinkers through direct interaction and exploration with the natural world.

Please donate to this wonderful organization, or better yet create your own fundraiser. "A $25 donation goes a long way, but a $250 fundraiser is a game changer!"

MOUNTAIN PARK ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATION wrote -

Beginning in 2002, the Mountain Park Environmental Center began connecting 5th grade students in Pueblo with nature through our Earth Studies Program.  Today, every 5th grader in Pueblo City Schools, more than 1250 students, participates in our educational programs.  Your donation will help ensure that the children of Pueblo can continue to experience nature and science first hand.

Students in our award winning Earth Studies Program spend several full days of experiential education within the 611-acre Pueblo Mountain Park.  Lessons are built around natural science themes and cover state and district educational standards in all the major academic fields.  Some examples of the activities include: exploring different mountain ecosystems, pond study, wildflower and tree identification, bird watching, and mammal tracking.

Your donation will help us support a number of schools that are try to raise funds in order come up for a special overnight adventure this spring. Durning the overnight the students get the chance to stay in the dorms at the Horseshoe Lodge, build forts, take a flashlight hike to learn more about the night sky, and of course making s'mores over an open fire! It is truly a once in a life time oportunity for many of these wonderful fifth graders.

All donations will be distributed evenly amongst the interested schools and any extra funds will go towards 2016 Summer Camp Scholarships, specifically for students who are going through our 2015-2016 Earth Studies year.  Help us ensure that this valuable program continues for the children of Pueblo.  Thank you for your donation.
