My name is Vivek Ramakrishnan and I'm a student at Columbia University. In 2009, I started a non-profit called Pass It On Soccer. In the summer of 2011, I visited Uganda and forged a close relationship with Moses Kalanzi, Founder and CEO of the Abato Foundation, a non-profit based in Mpigi, Uganda. Since 2012, Pass It On Soccer and the Abato Foundation have been co-hosting the annual Pass It On Soccer Cup in Uganda.
Mpigi is a town of 40,000 people just outside the capital of Kampala. Despite the popularity of soccer in Mpigi, there are only two soccer fields in the area and one of them is scheduled to be converted into a commercial market. The shortage of soccer and recreational space has driven strong community support for a new field. This goal of this collaborative project between Pass It On Soccer and Abato is to build and sustain a community soccer field Mpigi. The field will be located adjacent to the Abato School in Mpigi, and will be managed by the Foundation. With the help of a generous grant from the Columbia University chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, we were able to purchase the land for the project and volunteers have started to clear it. Now, we are fundraising for the additional costs needed to complete the construction of the field.
