Christine Goldman

THE STORY:

My name is Dr. Christine M. Goldman.  I am a wife, mother, Boston College Chemistry lecturer, Boston Marathon runner, and Team MR8 member, and Chair of the Advisory Board at the Martin Richard Institute of Social Justic at Bridgewater State University.

I have qualified for the Boston Marathon every year since 2007 and have run Boston nine times.  I love runnning marathons and have now run 18 of them.  The 2013 Boston Marathon started out as a beautiful day.  I crossed the finish line in 3 hours and 29 minutes with a smile on my face and gratitude in my heart.  After the usual post-race water, heat-shield blanket and race medal, I found my marathon bag and changed clothes in the womens' tent.  It was time to go home on the "T" (subway) and celebrate with my family, who had been watching along the route at mile 24 in our Brookline neighborhood.

The T was very crowded; people from all over the city were packed in together.  I recall it was taking a very long time for the train to get above ground and I was becoming impatient, knowing that my family would be expecting me.  My husband had told me not to bring my cell phone in my marathon bag; the BAA does not cover lost or damaged belongings.  After waiting and waiting underground, the train finally started moving and we saw daylight as we came above ground at Kenmore Square.  I knew exactly where we were so when I saw an ambulance from the Boston University area racing past us on Comm Ave, I knew something had happened.  The ambulance was followed by another and speeding right onto the marathon route, just a block away.   My first thought was that a runner had had a heart attack and needed assistance.  A little while later, a woman on the T got cell phone coverage and said there had been an explosion "downtown".   We were all quiet. I did not put together the ambulances on the race course with the fact that an explosion had occurred somewhere downtown.

I finally made it to my stop, got off and walked the 4 blocks home, my heat shield blanket flapping in the wind.  Passers by said congratulations.  I walked as fast as I could because I knew I was much later than I had ever been coming home from the marathon.  My family had been on facebook and had been watching the news, and even though they were certain I had crossed the finish line an hour before the first explosion, they were distraught because I was nowhere in sight and they had no way to contact me.  I rounded the corner on our street and found them running toward me, crying and very upset.  Bombs went off at the marathon finish line, they said, and we didn't know where you were, we didn't know if there were other bombs, we don't know who is doing this...I had no idea that the explosion I had heard about from the woman on the T was from the very place where I just came from.  The finish line on marathon day is usually a place of tremendous joy and happiness and it is usually very safe.  In the days and weeks to follow, we would learn the details of what had happened on that day at the Boston Marathon finish line.  We would also learn how this affected us as individuals.

I offically joined TEAM MR8 in January of 2015.  I ran the 2015 and 2016 Boston Marathons and the 2015 Chicago Marathon in my TEAM MR8 shirts, runnnig each mile for Martin.  I set a personal record of 3 hours 16 minutes at Chicago and dedicated this to Martin.  2 days ago I ran the 2016 NYC Marathon on Team MR8.  The crowds of spectators see my MR8 shirt and cheer for Martin- even thousands of miles away in Chicago; " Go MR eight!!!""Martin Richard!!"

Every day since April 15, 2013, I have run past the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at Boston University on my running route and  said a prayer for the vicitms and their families. I say a special prayer for Martin and his family.   If I am running elswhere, I will still say a prayer for them. I pray for Martin, for PEACE, for a better world. Through dedicating all my running and racing to Martin and being a Foundation Ambassador, I know I am turning my prayers into actions and doing my best to ensure that the Martin Richard Charitable Foundation grows stronger with every year.

As an Ambassador for TEAM MR8, I have spent time volunteering or visiting with a few of the organizations that the Martin Richard Foundation supports.  I have witnessed firsthand the joy on children's faces during a Challenger Sports Baseball game, or the pride and sense of accomplishment that young leaders feel at Reunion Day in Project 351.   It is your contributions that make these powerful, meaningful experiences possible.  The good that your contributions make is etched in my mind.  I see the whole cycle: I train hard, I run far and I run fast, I ask for finacial support from generous, caring donors like yourselves, and I see the beauty of it all come together when someone in need now has hope, love and peace.

I will forever run for Martin Richard; I want to always be a member of TEAM MR8.

I hope that you will join me in making a donation to help provide financial support to the Foundation.   Its mission is to honor Martin's message of Peace by investing in programs in education, athletics and community.

I thank you so much for your support.
