Hello and Welcome to my fundraising page for the 2017 Boston Marathon! My name is Talia Siravo and I teach first grade at Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy in the Lower Mills part of Dorchester, MA. It is truly an honor to have been chosen to run for Team MR8 – I will be dedicating every mile during my training and on race day to Martin.
Like many people, April 15, 2013 is a day that forever changed my life. My fiancé, Joe, who is now my husband, was running the marathon and I was at the finish line with most of my family, as well as his. Close friends came to help cheer him on, countless text messages were sent to me from people in Rhode Island (where we both grew up) wanting updates on how he was doing. Joe finished the marathon in 2 hours 47 minutes.
As the events unfolded throughout the afternoon and in the coming weeks, I remember feeling heartbroken and filled with impossible questions. Nothing seemed fair. However, in the weeks and months that followed, I remember seeing something incredible. In the midst of heartache and pain, a community banded together to help one another. I made a silent promise to myself to run the Boston Marathon and so my running journey began. For the past 3 years I have run many races. I feel blessed to run my most important race for Team MR8.
Out of everything that unfolded on April 15th, Martin’s story is one that resonated with me the most. Running for The Martin Richard Foundation will allow me to pay tribute to a boy who has had an everlasting impact on my outlook on life, though I never actually had the opportunity to meet him. His message of peace is something I try to live every day.
The Martin Richard Foundation is dedicated to investing in education, athletics, and community and their mission calls to me because I see how important all those things are as a teacher. The Foundation encourages youth and adults to improve the lives of others and become peacemakers, leaders, and entrepreneurs. Martin is a symbol for peace – his words are something I try to teach and instill in my young students.
Thank you so much for your support as I begin my journey! I hope you will check back frequently for updates on how my training is going in the upcoming months. Please feel free t to forward this to anyone who you think might want to help me reach my goals! The money raised will go towards creating and improving programs that foster peace and unity in the Boston area.
Again, thank you for your support!
