THE STORY:

RECEIVE an ORIGINAL ART PRINT with a $50- DONATION

Hello!

My name is Kate Glathar, and I am a Music Therapy Graduate Student at Molloy College. I was recently accepted into the Jamaican Field Service Project, an incredible organization that sends supplies, musical instruments, health care professionals, teachers and music therapists to work throughout the rural parishes of Jamaica. As a music therapy student, I will be working at a variety of locations, including parish infirmaries, hospitals, homeless centers, and special needs schools across the island. The populations I will be working with will include geriatric, homeless, children with autism and the developmentally disabled.

That’s great Kate, but what is music therapy… and why is it important to the residents in Jamaica you'll be working with?

Great question! ;-) According to the website for the American Music Therapy Association (www.musictherapy.org), music therapy is “an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals.” Very simply put, music therapy is the use of music to achieve non-musical goals. While I could write several pages on the positive effects that music has on the brain and clients of various populations, I’m sure that most of you already understand the transformative power that music possesses. As a music therapist, my job will be to tap into that power, and use it to address the needs of each individual client.

While music therapy goals are highly individualized, and cannot be decided upon before a proper assessment, here is a list of potential goals I might address while in Jamaica, based on the populations I’ll be working with:

  • Pain Management
  • Increased Creative Self-Expression
  • Memory Recall
  • Increased Emotional Comfort
  • Decreased Isolation
  • Improved Verbal Communication

Again, these are just a few, generalized, goals and I’m sure they will change and become more specific once I’m there.

Please help me to fund this trip by donating. Your support means the world to me and will help me to make a difference in the lives of the people I will be working with.
