Please email us for more info at: firstname.lastname@example.org - Whenever you think about Hawaii your thoughts are automatically drawn to the palm trees, the world’s famous sunsets and the gorgeous hotels. What you may not notice is that under the veneer of perfection there is a large community of ‘refugees in paradise’. A community of about two thousand Marshallese live on the Big Island of Hawai’i. In 1954, after the US military did nuclear tests on one of the Marshall Islands, many Marshallese have had to leave their own homes because of the high levels of radioactive radiation in their areas. Due to the high levels of radiation on the Marshall Islands, many Marshallese have contracted cancer. The Marshallese have lived through great adversities, both nuclear and environmental. In spite of the difficulties, the Marshallese community stands out as beacons of hope, both to their own people and to those who are privileged enough to meet them. “Let’s keep thinking about life and let’s keep going. Don’t give up”. *Extra funds raised, will be used for a Marshallese scholarship fund for continued education.
