HOUSTON - Right now, there's no shelter or program in Texas dedicated to serving child victims of sex trafficking. Most service providers can't afford to meet the state's strict requirements, but one local ministry is taking up the challenge to serve some of our most abused children.
Beyond the glare of headlights, far from the noise of the city, is a safe house away from harm, away from shame. Freedom Place will be home to American girls rescued from sex trafficking in the Houston area. The 13th Amendment, passed in 1865, was meant to abolish slavery in the United States forever. But the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children estimates that between 100,000 and 300,000 American children are enslaved in the nefarious world of human trafficking each year. They are used as sex slaves and often raped multiple times a day by adults who are willing to pay generously to have sex with a child. On the average, these victims are only 12 to 13 years of age.
