BENEFITING: MUNDO VERDE BILINGUAL PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL
ORGANIZER: MUNDO VERDE BILINGUAL PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL
I say Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School so many times a day it now rolls off my tongue. Chances are you hear me say it often and that is because this is a place that is really special to me.
Everything about Mundo Verde resonates with me: The Expeditionary Learning principles, its focus on the community, its commitment to sustainability….
Expeditionary Learning at Mundo Verde is about encouraging students to engage with the world rather than being handed down information to memorize. At Mundo Verde students learn how to learn, understand why it is important to learn, and how they can use their skills and efforts to contribute to the improvement of their communities.
This is a place where like-minded people-- who I am lucky to call friends --come to work for a common goal: the education of future global stewards. Mundo Verde walks the talk: asking staff members to bring reusable for meals, offering incentives for staff who take public transportation or bike to work.
One of my personal favorite features in our past location was our garden. In the garden students did hands-on explorations that at other schools are just theoretical. In the garden students grew vegetables that they use used to prepare healthy meals and gain nutritious eating habits. In the garden staff held meetings and took lunch breaks.
Our old garden was great but our new site has outdoor areas that are completely paved so in order to create a new fabulous garden we will have to do some planning, digging, builidng and planting. The next stage of construction will focus icreating the garden space of our dreams. That is why I am choosing to direct contributions made by my friends and family to the creation of a new Mundo Verde Garden!
This garden will be "possible by contributions to Mundo Verde from cool people like you. Thank you."
