BENEFITING: MUNDO VERDE BILINGUAL PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL
ORGANIZER: MUNDO VERDE BILINGUAL PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL
Many of you - my friends and family - know that I've been working for six years to establish Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School. I don't know how many of you know WHY I am on this journey, or how personal the journey is for me...
Mundo Verde started as a concept in 2008 and opened with 122 students in temporary space in the second floor of a commercial office building in August 2011. On September 2nd, 2014, the first day of our 4th school year, 405 students and their families walked into Mundo Verde's newly acquired and recently renovated and soon-to-be LEED certified long-term home, eager for what adventures the school year would bring and delighted with the bright and spacious classrooms and the prospect of a long-term home.
Mundo Verde has been received with high acclaim in the District. We have grown each of our first three years, adding a grade and 80-120 students each year, and will continue to grow for two more years. The elementary school has the second longest waiting list in the city, with over 1100 applicants for fewer than 100 spaces. And, we've been instrumental in founding an international baccalaureate middle/high school where are students will have a pipeline to continue their studies through 12th grade if they desire.
Fundamentally, the quest to establish Mundo Verde is rooted in the simple Responsive Classroom tenant that ‘how children learn is as important as what they learn.’
