BENEFITING: Terence & Jennifer International Fund Inc
Children in one of the poorest, most dangerous slums of San Pedro Sula, Honduras have no opportunity to attend school. Their families lack necessary funds for uniforms, books, and pencils. The older children support their families by collecting garbage in recycled refrigerators with make-shift wheels, taking whatever lempira is offered in exchange for the garbage and cast-offs they will then dump in their own back yards. These children have almost nothing. However, what they do have is a young man who grew up in this same area and has broken away from the gangs that offer a bleak future. Humberto now teaches music to schoolchildren in the surrounding area of this slum, La Rivera Hernandez. He has a young family of his own now, but he is compelled to return to offer something back to those children whose lives mirror his own youth. Humberto returns to offer music lessons, so these children can "own" something of their own.. a skill, an ability. His dream is to someday form a marching band. That dream might become a reality if we can raise $1,100.00. One of the local schools is preparing to sell all of the musical instruments from their former program and Humberto has a chance to purchase them. There is no ability to raise this kind of money in Honduras, but we think we could do that here. Raising the money is a small part, Humberto will take those instruments into those desperate neighborhoods and he will provide those children with something important, and beautiful.
