HOURS PLEDGED: 700
As a freshman in high school, I founded a widespread volunteer organization called Musical Notes. Musical Notes is an after-school music program that has served hundreds of economically disadvantaged Elementary and Middle School students across Northern New Jersey; the students learn Broadway tunes, vocal performance, and theatrical technique in a crafted curriculum I designed at the onset of the program. At the culmination of each course semester, my students perform for their friends, family, and community members. Musical Notes is currently hosted by nine Elementary and Middle Schools, Religious Institutions, Family Centers, and a summer camp across half a dozen school districts, and is in the process of expanding to serve children with special needs. The program has been featured in the Northern Valley Suburbanite, The New Jersey Jewish Standard, and is scheduled to appear in L’Chaim magazine in the near future. The program has also been presented on the Music Theater International Showspace website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed and the Creative Bridge Coalition Facebook webpage. Musical Notes is fiscally sponsored by City Lore, a non-profit organization in NY that works to preserve the arts. I have taught close to five hundred students in the last four years, and I have recruited a team of very talented and dedicated high school volunteers to spread music education along with me, in the face of stringent arts budget cuts. I has given over seven hundred hours of my time to this community service initiative. I am hoping to now raise money for my students and their schools!
