Music for Excellence Program in Oakland Public Schools

The Business in the Arts Networking Circle (BANC) is a network of local businesses that have joined together to promote a lively arts environment, connect and collaborate, and support vital music education programs. BANC collaborates with Oakland East Bay Symphony to build partnerships and bring resources that benefit not only business and the Symphony, but also the community.

Given the power of music to transform lives, BANC is proud to support Oakland East Bay Symphony’s Music for Excellence (MUSE) Program.

What is the Project?
Music for Excellence In-School Mentor Program and After-School Program brings music education and enrichment to nearly 2,200 young people in 19 of Oakland’s public schools, providing students in grades 4 – 12 with continuous, sequential instrumental music instruction - tuition free.

Mentors work with students in small groups and individually, teaching technique and musical development. Each of the Mentors makes a point to share their joy of artistic expression and help students find a creative outlet in music, reinforcing positive behaviors and enabling students to view themselves as part of a community.

The objectives of our Mentors and MUSE are to Engage, Instruct and Inspire children of all backgrounds, fostering participation in the music life of our community and promoting a lifelong appreciation of the arts.

The Project seeks to narrow the opportunity gap among students with no other access to music education.
• A 2006 study released by the National Association for Music Education found higher graduation rates in high schools with music programs: by as much as 17%.
• Additional studies in brain research prove that instrumental music education contributes to healthy brain development, particularly in literacy (both language and numeric).

How You Can Help
Join us in helping Music for Excellence.

Together we can raise $7,500 – enough to sponsor the In-School Mentor Program and After School Program at Bret Harte Middle School in Oakland for one year.

(DATA for Bret Harte Middle School here)

For $50, one child will be provided a mentor who is not only a professional musician, but also an experienced music educator, for the entire school year. You can make it possible for a child to learn an instrument, build discipline, imagination and self-esteem.

For $100, one child will have a music mentor for the entire school year, access to Saturday Practice Labs in West Oakland and the opportunity to participate in the MUSE After School Orchestra, learning several pieces of new repertoire and at least 4 performance opportunities.

For $250, a classroom of elementary school students will attend a Young People’s Concert free, and will be visited by a Music for Excellence Docent trained to help students prepare for their Oakland East Bay Symphony concert experience.
