BENEFITING: STEEL CITY GREYHOUNDS INC
EVENT DATE: Jul 16, 2017
On Oct. 1, 2011, I ran my first 5K. I was inspired while cheering at the Steel City Greyhounds station at mile 18 of the 2011 Pittsburgh Marathon, so decided to run the 2012 Pittsburgh Half Marathon for the greyhounds. While I thought I'd run one half marathon then call it quits, I haven't looked back. Since the greyhounds started my adventures into running, and later triathlons, I dedicate my miles to these gentle creatures who are born into the racing industry while I get to choose to race for fun. I want to make sure that each gets the calm, relaxed retirement they deserve!
One week after my 37th birthday I will tackle the half ironman distance--my first half tri. That means I will be swimming 1.2 miles, biking 56 miles, and running 13. 1 miles consecutively for a total of 70.3 miles in Geneva, NY at the Musselman Triathlon on July 16, 2017! I will log many many miles in preparation for race day so that July 16th can be my victory lap. I've decided that the mantra for training will be swim, bike, run, nap -- repeat! I will get the most support from my two retirees with the last part of training. They are excellent napping partners.
All of my fundraising will go to the all-volunteer organization that Kevin and I adopted our two greyhounds from, Steel City Greyhounds. The organization works to find retired racing greyhounds their furever homes after they are done racing. While the adoption fee is $250, the organization incurs more costs for the medical care, transportation, and preparation for greyhounds to go into homes. This means your donation will help to make it possible to keep the adoption fee affordable for most and to make sure that the greyhounds receive the best possible medical attention once they come into the organization. It also supports an organization that developed many important friendships and makes our adopted city of Pittsburgh feel like home!
