BENEFITING: MAUMEE VALLEY SAVE-A-PET INC
EVENT DATE: May 18, 2013
On Saturday, May 18th, I'm running the Dart Frog Dash 5k at the Toledo Zoo to raise money for Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet (MVSAP), a no kill and cage free animal shelter in our hometown of Toledo OH. They have taken many stray cats from me and it makes me so happy because the cats all roam free in the shelter and even have an outdoor cattery for nice weather. The dogs are all cage free too and play together as a pack (except for at night when no one is there to supervise them) in the big dog room or fenced in yard.
When we were in Lexington KY the last two baseball seasons, we found out about an animal shelter an hour southeast of Lexington that euthanizes whatever dogs and cats they have every Thursday. I convinced Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet to pull animals from this shelter whenever they have room even though it's about five hours away (they also pull dogs from local animal control facilities)! Just recently, they transferred a litter of four puppies that were on the euthanasia list in Kentucky and they arrived with parvo. The great news - after several scary weeks, the three females survived! The bad news - the vet bill is several thousand dollars, coming on the the heels of seven very sick cats that were left in a box on their doorstep; all needed medical attention and a big vet bill.
Please sponsor me in the Dart Frog Dash 5k to help Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet continue their lifesaving work. The dogs and cats in their care get a safe haven full of love, warmth and good food for as long as it takes for them to be adopted, and the doggies and kitties get whatever medical care they need regardless of the financial stress that can come along with that. The group started in the late 1970s as an all volunteer rescue group, and opened a shelter almost four years ago. They still have very little paid staff and are a model for what other shelters should strive for.
You can either donate online here, or mail a check made out to Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet to me at 2124 McIntosh Dr., Holland OH 43528. Please donate in whatever way is easier for you, but note that Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet benefits more from a check (credit card processing fees).
P.S. - the puppy pictured is Shay who was saved from euthanasia at the Kentucky shelter last June. The cats in the photographs - Pearl (black and white), Raven (black) and Oscar (orange and white) are all stray cats that MVSAP has taken from me (thereby saving my marriage three times!). Peal and Oscar are still waiting for their forever homes!
