My 41st Birthday for Ninos Del Sol Orphanage in Peru
Organized by: Leah Forester Johnson
For my 41st birthday, I'm helping the Ninos del Sol orphanage in Peru by asking for a $41 donation to the children in lieu of gifts.
Ninos Del Sol is comprised of 23 children who were rescued from horrific situations by my late, great friend Mama Kia. They are in dire need to funds to provide food, shelter and education since Kia passed away and much funding has dried up.
YOU CAN MAKE A DONATION AND MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE. THAT'S THE BEST GIFT I COULD ASK FOR!
Last March, Jade and I travelled to Peru to spend time with the children, to meet their new directors, and to lend our hands towards beautifying a Bed & Breakfast they run to bring funds to the children.
In 1995 our beloved Mama Kia came to Peru and found many children living in doorways and streets who had lost their parents. Most had been abused and none had more than the clothes on their backs. When her grandson passed shortly after being born, he came to her in a dream and told her to take her love for him and share it with all children. This is how Casa de Milagros – The House of Miracles was born. Kia and the children lived as a family in this colorful home full of love and light, connected to the cycles of life, growing most of their vegetables, cooking and preparing food and medicine together. The children were cared for in a way that precious seeds who will grow to make a difference in this world, to be leaders for the new time, are nurtured, because this is who they are. With this love, the older children are excelling, attending college, dreaming big, and will be the future of Peru. When Mama Kia passed away due to cancer in 2010, the kids went through a second round of loss and abandonment. It was an intense period of financial and emotional chaos for the family. Now with the recent loss of their main funder, we are calling in support to make sure the children don’t need to leave their home and be handed over to the government. I was lucky to have Kia as my dear sister, to weave our lives together over the years and be inspired by her love in action. In 2005 I got to stay with her and the children at Casa de Milagros. Now ten years later, I reconnected with the children in their new home in Urabamba, Peru. For the past two years, the new directors, Viviana and Avishai, have been holding a beautiful space of love to help the kids feel safe and protected again. The new home where the children live is strikingly similar to the original Casa de Milagros with gardens overflowing with flowers and organic food, murals on the walls and happy children glowing. Ninos del Sol was blessed to have a funder who donated most of the monthly budget to support the 23 children, including the higher education of 4 of the oldest children who are living and studying in Cuzco. Some things have shifted in the funder’s life, and he is no longer able to fully fund the project. At this crucial time when Ninos del Sol no longer has a secure future, Mama Kia has woven her magic and connected some of her dearest beloveds, inspiring us to work together to call in support for her children. Below is a breakdown of the monthly budget. The current land they are living on is for sale for around one million US dollars. Land in the Sacred Valley of Peru is expensive and this land is quite special, with the possibility of partial sustainability for the project through 7 accommodation spaces for visitors & a fantastic workshop space for retreats. You can also support the project by staying at the B & B – see http://www.sacredvalleyretreatbb.com. We launched this campaign on Mama Kia's birthday January 12th. Each year she would spend her birthday inviting those around her to join in the beauty and magic of supporting Casa de Milagros. As many of you know Mama Kia was a tireless fundraiser and she dedicated the last decades of her life to building this magical home for these lovely children who are our future leaders in the new time. You are invited to join forces in supporting the future leaders of Peru, leaders in creating a peaceful world of truly honoring Pachamama. Ninos del Sol is still registered in the U.S. with non-profit status as Casa de Milagros. All of the tax-deductible donations will go directly to the children. If each of us can make a generous contribution to this campaign, and also invite our friends and social networks to do the same, we will truly be giving Mama Kia a most beautiful birthday gift.
