My Amazing Syrian Friends

THE STORY:

I arrived in the southern Turkish city of Antalya a week ago. It was getting late and my expected host was no where to be found. So out of desperation I knocked on a lit up apartment window to ask for directions. What has happened since then has touched me to my core.

The 3 men invited me in, layed out a meal on the floor to share, and offered me a place to sleep for the night. As I said, that was six days ago and I'm still here. They have next to nothing and the more I learn about them the more impressed, and at the same time saddened, I become.

Three years ago they left their home in Syria to escape an impending civil war that has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands. The father and his 21 year old son are living here apart from their wife/mother and 6 other children/siblings in order to work and attend university. Additionally, a friend is also living here in the same situation- apart from his kids and wife in order to find work.

They posses only a few couches used for sleeping, a refrigerator, a portable stove, and a bathroom. Things I take for granted such as TV, wifi, a table, beds, and more do not exist. However, until today I have never seen them sad which always brought me inspiration. They have shown me how to live happily with nothing to their name. They have treated me like a son and a brother and always insist on taking care of me instead of the other way around.

A few days ago another brother and cousin arrived to live and look for work. There weren't enough couches for everyone so I thanked them and said I'd look for a hostel. However, they were saddened by this and adamant that I was more than welcome. Not only was I welcome but they absolutely would not let me be the one sleeping on the floor.

Today that brother and cousin left to return to another city for work. I asked my new friend Ahmed why they had to go, he replied "no job, they don't eat." So I implored how his mother and 5 other siblings make it by, he replied in one word "Ismael" (his brother). I wanted to cry.

The restaurant his father has found work in has not yet opened, Ahmed is beginning university and will look for work soon, so that leaves Ismael to bear the weight of the world on his shoulders. This 19 year old kid is in a position of having to support his family of 9 while life in a new country has only just begun for them. Is it fair? No, but as the saying goes "life isn't fair."

Perhaps we, however, can make life a little easier for them.

The kindness they show me is unreal and leaves me wanting to cry before I go to sleep at night. They are braver, kinder, and a more amazing family than I've ever found.

As an American I am raised with the idea that I live in a land of opportunity where we're all encouraged to reach for the stars. We take chances, we take risks and when we fall we're encouraged to get back up and try again. No dream is too big and no goal is too lofty, but for my new life long friends I wonder if dreams can ever be anything more than fairy tales.

That's why I am pledging to donate $500 to them. I ask and hope that perhaps you can join my effort as well. Something as small as $5 can literally impact this family, while $5 for most of us means skipping Starbucks the next time we have a craving. Of course, everything is immensely appreciated and I am forever grateful!

They have no idea I am doing this so I hope together we can present them with the surprise of a lifetime. I have not listed a goal amount because I know anything will be more than nothing for them. I had planned to leave in a few days but I have decided to stick around longer to see how much we can affect this family. I thank you for joining this effort!

Forever grateful,
Korbin
