BENEFITING: ONE SIMPLE WISH
Thank you for supporting the 9th Annual NAFI Summer Flag Football League! This fundraiser will benefit approximately 80 youth who are in non-profit residential and foster care placements throughout the state of Rhode Island. The funds raised will provide the youth with an activity for the entire summer! The money raised will pay for the Indoor sports center where the league is held, uniforms (jersey and shorts) for each participant and a banquet at the end of the season to present awards and celebrate team work.
Eight years ago, North American Family Institute/Rhode Island started an 8 week summertime flag football league for approximately 30-40 youth in our foster care and residential programs. The NAFI/ Rhode Island Director of Operations, Jerry Carnevale and Program Director, Mark Rhynard, saw the need to create a league for these youth who wanted to be part of a team but because of their present situations, they were unable to. These young people move in and out of care so quickly at times, change schools and many of these youth lack self-confidence to join a school or community league. Many of our youth have never participated in a positive recreational activity and have not learned the valuable life lessons that one learns from being a part of a team and playing sports-- before participating in this league.
For eight years, under the leadership of Jerry and Mark, staff members from all of our programs have joined together to coach the youth for the summer league. Some staff have experience playing football themselves in high school or college, while others take a risk to learn the sport for the first time in order to support the youth. Over the years, we have seen these young people develop skills and talents, learn sportsmanship, integrity, teamwork and build their self-confidence while participating in a healthy and positive activity in a supportive environment. They build a sense of community with one another. Many youth have gone on to join sport teams in their schools and communities after this experience.
