Up until recently, I was under the impression that passing out was a phenomena that many people experience. The first time I passed out was in seventh grade and has persisted ever since. I now know that my passing out is due to a condition called Vasovagal Syncope.
For the medically illiterate like myself, essentially it means that my heart rate does not respond well to outside stimulus and if I am sick, overheated, tired, etc. I risk passing out causing my heart to stop. After tests and visits with specialists, it was determined that receiving a pacemaker is the best solution for my condition.
On Sunday, May 7th I will (attempt to) run my first half marathon in order to raise money for UPMC's Heart and Vascular Institute. While the money may not go directly towards research for conditions exactly like my own, there are so many conditions that people are dealing with that involve problems of the heart that need cures or better therapies. It is critical that research continues to occur and that the medical community keeps making advancements.
On February 6th, I will receive a pacemaker. On May 7th, I am determined to finish the Pittsburgh Half Marathon so that maybe one day more young people aren't told the best option is to receive a pacemaker.
Anything you can contribute is appreciated beyond words can say.
