THE STORY:

"Namaste" (with the palms of your hands together and fingers pointing upward)

That is the formal greeting in Nepalese.

Maya has been working with [orphaned] children for well over 10 years now. She has gone to several places around the world, with the help of her sponsors, to raise awareness and funds for her organization in her home country Nepal. This time she had to borrow money from her family members and friends to purchase a ticket to come to America to raise funds for a much needed new facility that is expected to house approximately 100 children.

The organization she represents, Bal Sewa Griha, was established in 1995 to support abandoned, orphan, destitute and other helpless children by providing shelter, education, medical care and vocational training so that they can be good and independent citizens of Nepal.

Just to give you a general idea of what life in Nepal is like:
1. Out of 184 countries, Nepal ranks #19 poorest
2. 40% of Nepalis live in poverty
3. Over 30% of Nepalese live on less than $14USD per person, per month, according to the national living standards survey conducted in 2010-2011
