Dear Friends:

I’m glad to report that thanks to your support & words of encouragement, a little help from the tides that day, and that TV news article, the Bridge-to-Bridge swim was a huge success.

My original fundraising goal of $5,000 is ancient history; it looks like we’re going to come in right at $10,000!

More than just the dollars and sense (which of course matter), as I see it, your donation represents a kind of endorsement. There are a lot of great causes out there, and they all compete daily for our attention and resources (and please give to them all as best you can! :-) ). Yet when I stepped up and said “I’m going to go for it” you stepped up and said “we’re with you!”…and that is so heart-warming.

For me, it’s also been a lesson in belief. Here’s what I believe: that decent housing is a basic human right. And when you donated, you let me know that you believe in me. How great is that?

The last lesson is in awareness. The housing crisis in San Francisco has made national news, most of it focused on the artists and working-class residents that are getting pushed out of the City. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to highlight that the housing crisis isn’t just effecting our vibrant middle class. Rather, it effects the most needy among us just the same if not more so. By demonstrating my compassion for them, you echoed that compassion with your support. To share in that compassion is powerful.

As for the swim itself, I’ll tell you it was a blast. 62/63 degrees, so too cold for a backyard pool but plenty comfortable for this event. I had a half wetsuit but didn’t need it. The water was choppy by the Golden Gate but eased out after the first 30 minutes. We first swam from the south tower of the Golden Gate right towards Alcatraz for about a mile in order to avoid an ebb in front of Chrissy Field. Then we sighted off Coit Tower and headed towards land. Once we were 100 feet off shore, the current the rest of the way was really quite strong, and whipped us around Fisherman’s Wharf and towards the Bay Bridge. I had to pause to let a ferry pull into the Ferry Building. I overtrained a bit; I was ready for a 2+ hour swim but it took 1:40 thanks to those record-setting currents.

Here’s a video somebody else made from that day:

Again, thank you very, very much for your gift.
