BENEFITING: ON THE MOVE
EVENT DATE: Jul 22, 2013
Napa, the town I grew up in, has been making huge strides recently to broaden awareness & acceptance of its L.G.B.T.Q residents. There is an organization in town through On the Move, which work to help to offer support to all ages of people who identify as L.G.B.T.Q.
This issue is particularly important to me. My younger brother is gay and while he knew this about himself, he never felt comfortable or safe coming out until he had graduated from high-school. Brian has chosen not to live in Napa, and currently lives in San Francisco. I know he faced challenges to try to date in this town, where very few gay men felt comfortable being "out."
Later, as a college student, in Berkeley, I realized I was bi-sexual. Moving back to Napa after living in the East Bay for several years, I didn't remember how strong the homophobia was in Napa. I was amazed when I entered a same-sex relationship at the level of surprise from some community members. And, as a bi-sexual person, there were times were I felt a lack of community support even among some gay people I knew. The attitude then toward bisexuality was much more judgemental and misunderstood - as if I really wasn't bisexual, I just didn't have the guts to come "out" as fully gay.
This was nearly six years ago and I can proudly say that Napa has come along way baby! I want to keep the momentum going to increase education and awareness for those who are still in the fridge of understanding and supporting L.G.B.T.Q people (maybe along the way we can begin calling them that instead of "issues") and continue to create a compassionate & informed society.
