BENEFITING: NAROPA UNIVERSITY
Every year students in the Alternative Break Course are given an alternative to the “traditional” spring break experience, instead engaging in a week of volunteer service with their peers.
This year they will address poverty and housing insecurity on the Pine Ridge Reservation, while learning about the culture of the Lakota people.
Why Pine Ridge?
- The median income is approximately $2,600 to $3,500 per year and 97% of our Lakota people live below the poverty line
- 1/3 of the homes lack basic clean water and sewage while 40% lack electricity
- There is an estimated average of 17 people living in each family home, even though these homes may only have two to three rooms
- The Lakota language is an Endangered Language and many of the beautiful and powerful traditions of the Lakota people are being lost
When students return home, they reflect on the experience and share with their community about what they have learned. They also identify how they plan to make a sustained and continuous commitment to service.
