In Fall 2012 I travelled to Nananu in Fiji to coordinate a service learning program for college students from the US. We worked on an infrastructure project for the village of Nananu. While I was there I met Mohammed Iliaz Janif and Simione Turagabeci, two kind and passionate teachers at the local elementary school. They are currently raising funds for improvements to their school including new furniture for the classrooms and the library as well as constructing a teachers quarters. Their goal is $2000, and so far they have raised $596. This community has worked on many projects over the years by partnering with student volunteer groups from the US. I am confident they will spend this money well. I have seen these teachers in class with their students, in the local church and at community events. They are well-loved, intelligent, hard-working leaders in their community. I also love that this project was initiated within the community and primarily funded by community members. I'm hoping we can help add to the amount they have already raised.
