Hi everyone! My name is Nate (Nathaniel Porter) - I'm an MIT alum ('13) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering currently working at Northrop Grumman as a Systems Engineer. I like to solve problems, help others (please check out this site), and I am finally taking steps to realizing my dream: starting a set of organizations which equip individuals to pursue their passions in meaningful, efficient ways.
The first organization to accomplish this goal is called Dream Without Bounds, an educational foundation. The vision of Dream Without Bounds is to change the way the United States educates future business professionals, especially those in underserved communities. Dream Without Bounds operates under the philosophy that everyone is a future business professional, but our pilot program will be targeting middle and high school youths in the Baltimore, MD area.
In order to make this organization and pilot program a reality, I am anticipating the initial need for $2,075; however, additional funding would provide significantly advantageous support such as room for a web presence, advertising budget, media budget, consulting support, and misc. hired help to develop curriculum, etc. Any extra funding over $5,000 would be reserved for future use (i.e. grant writing, technological resources, etc.)
The line items are listed as follows:
1. Incorporation Costs (for MD): $225
2. 501(c)(3) Status Cost: $850
3. Inital Legal and Accounting Services: $1000
4. Initial Web Site Creation, Platform, and Branding Materials: $500
5. Initial Advertising and Fundraising Budget: $750
6. Initial Social Media Strategy: $175
7. Initial Consulting Services: $1000
8. Miscellaneous: $500
Dream Without Bounds aims to launch a pilot youth educational program in Baltimore, MD for the development of communication skills, critical thinking, and passionate ideas. We've discovered that students with access to opportunities, particularly those relevant to their interests, are more likely to express themselves in constructive ways which contribute value to the greater community. It is our goal to convert this expression into released potential: a passion-conscious individual with a mindset to persevere.
Dream Without Bounds has a distinctly valuable and unique solution: Artistic Applications of Practical Science (AAPS), a student-driven, STEM-based after-school program focusing on the creative expression of innate interests and ideas. This program provides students with an opportunity to pursue their interests, along with a platform to communicate them to a wide audience. In concept, there are two variations of the program, one for middle school, and another for high school.
In middle school, students learn foundational skills, and begin to outline their goals for the future. Throughout the year, students will learn how to design and publish a mobile application in the form of a digital publication. At the end of the semester, students will market their ideas on the digital platform to garner support from donors, sponsors, or organizational grant funding.
In high school, students will work in pre-assigned groups in order to develop their previously marketed ideas into a solution for a pre-selected theme (education, travel, health, etc). In this version, students learn team interaction, professional attire, technical and communication skills, and solution-driven development. The year-long program culminates into a final presentation in front of civic leaders, industry professionals, and creative minds. The goal is for high school teams which present with clarity of thought and develop a high-scoring solution will be eligible for internships with local businesses.
