I have a had a school garden for 4 years. I volunteer my time during the summer to work with students in the garden. They gain experience in all aspects of garden care. Students also use the produce to make healthy snacks, eat, and donate to the local soup kitchen. During the school year there is a garden club where students are able to learn about the garden during the seasons when we are not planting or harvesting through reading, research and the arts. I would like to expand their experience by incorporating more about agriculture and its importance to our lives. I would like my students to be able to visit working rural and urban farms, agricultural fairs and historic homesteads to gain first hand knowledge about where food and natural fibers originate and to gain an insight into the historical significance agriculture played in the lives of our ancestors.
