Nathan Prentice is a rising adventure athlete, thru-hiker and speaker. While only twenty years old and relatively new to the field, Nathan brings passion and skill with him in the pursuit of tackling his goals.
Nathan was born and raised in Westford, MA, USA and now lives nomadically, either adventuring on the trail or working in outdoor education year-round. He began studying Robotics Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in 2013, participating in the Honors Program, Jazz Rock Big Band and the Cornell Cup USA competition and working at the IT Technology Help Center on campus. Nathan quickly discovered that, while he could enjoy any individual aspect of his education, as a whole he felt uninspired and lacking direction. After thriving during the best summer of his life to date at Camp Hazen YMCA in 2014, Nathan struggled with the thought of returning to a college experience at that time in his life. He made a conscious decision to step away from a formal education until he felt self-motivated and inspired to continue his studies.
Nathan has been extremely productive with his two years’ gap. After working in outdoor education at Camp Hazen YMCA and Smugglers’ Notch Resort, successfully thru-hiking Vermont’s “Long Trail”, completing several smaller adventures, presenting on lightweight backpacking, and preparing for a 6-month trek through the Patagonian Andes, he has found that inspiration to continue his formal education. Having seen the value of his training as a Wilderness First Responder and as an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, he has realized that his passion for adventure can intersect with his passion for emergency medicine. Nathan is currently applying as a transfer student to Colgate University, Bard College, Amherst College and a few other schools with a desire to prepare himself for medical school. While this is a current goal of his, Nathan’s intention is to keep his doors open while he earns a bachelor’s degree. Ultimately Nathan sees himself working in remote disaster relief, search and rescue, or for a global organization such as Doctors without Borders.
Outside of his formal education, Nathan is an Eagle Scout and currently serves as an adult leader in Troop 159, Westford, MA. He has also studied and taught martial arts for over fourteen years, with experience in Parker Kenpo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Small-Circle Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Arnis, Capoeira, and Aikido. Another life ambition of Nathan’s is to become conversant in nine languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic, Mandarin, Russian and Japanese. Already bilingual and also learning Spanish in preparation for his trek through the Patagonian Andes, Nathan knows that learning languages will empower him to connect with people all over the world as he continues his adventures.
Nathan believes that the adventures in the outdoors are a catalyst of change and that, whatever those changes may be, it’s always important to recognize that adventures can come from the most seemingly inconsequential of experiences. Nathan encourages others to constantly wonder about the world around them and tackle their own adventures through ingenuity, integrity and perseverance.
