National Pantsuit Day
Organized by: National Pantsuit Day
It's Sami Kriegstein, Mike Jacobson, Kate Dearing, and Lauren Stephenson, and we created National Pantsuit Day. We were tired of all the hate and fear in this election cycle and wanted to celebrate Hillary, and the fact that we get to vote for a woman as president! So we decided to bring some goofiness and excitement back into the political discourse by flooding the streets with men and women wearing colorful, 90s-fabulous pantsuits, as a visual, inclusive declaration that “I’m With Her!”
Thus, on October 22, 2016, despite cold weather and the promise of rain, 200 shoulder-padded men, women, children and dogs rallied in Foley square in Manhattan and jubilantly marched over the Brooklyn Bridge to HRC Brooklyn office for a high-five line with Hillary For America volunteers and a great pep talk from Michelle Kwan. At the same time, concurrent National Pantsuit Day events took place in cities around the country, including Detroit, Philadelphia, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston.
The day garnered an incredible amount of national press coverage and roughly 30 million media impressions, including a retweet from Hillary herself (AHHH!). We think it offered the people who participated and watched it a delightful break from this viciously negative election cycle, and maybe – just maybe – changed a few hearts and minds as well.
Our little foursome toiled tirelessly to make all this magic happen, donating our time and resources for 4 weeks straight…but the truth is, there were other costs associated with National Pantsuit Day: $1588.09, to be exact.
We’re reaching out to you today to help us raise the exact amount we spent out-of-pocket on bringing NPD to life, and not a penny more.
Here’s how it broke down
-Website design and domain: $129.90 (The website allowed us to have immediate legitimacy and created a central place to send people for info on all 7 events and all the press)
-Facebook Ads: $50.00
-Bon Temps Brass Band: $800.00 (We wanted this to be the most fun anyone had ever had in a pantsuit and felt music was critical to creating that energy. Bon Temps gave us a huge discount. Please hire them! Thanks, Earl!)
-Ribbon and craft materials for volunteers: $43.00 (We made sashes for NPD Crew and founders to wear, so they could be easily identified. We wanted make this all as easy as pie. The cost would have been less but we had to spring for expedited shipping)
-Hillary Cardboard Cutout: $154.00 (Perhaps the best money we spent. This life-size cutout danced over us while we crossed the bridge, and she was so elegant and patient for photo-ops afterward).
-Chopsticks and double stick tape: $45.00 (Co:Collective generously donated all of our printed materials (Thanks Co!). We cut out famous badass women's faces and used chopsticks and double stick tape to make all those face lollipops. It wouldn't have been the same without all those feminist forebears marching with us).
-Laminating signs: FREE (Nancy Wonders generously funded a last minute laminating of all our posters. THANK YOU!)
-American Flags: $76.11 (150 flags served as “thank you’s” to marchers, so they could get into the spirit!)
-Pantsuits: $128.16 (We bought a lot of cheap pantsuits on eBay to provide to the Pantsuit-less and make the dress code as little of an obstacle possible. We handed them out day-of to volunteers and people who still wanted and needed a proper pantsuit.)
-Buttons and Fake Pearl Necklaces: $161.92 (Gotta have swag and accessories! We wanted this to feel like a dress up party. Also we will never stop wearing our “Bitch, Pleats.” pins.)
Grand Total: 1588.09
We paid for this entire thing out of pocket, in addition to roughly 300 hours of work. We would love any size donation to help us off-set the cost. Thanks for believing in us, thanks for the support, and most importantly…GO VOTE. Let’s finish what we started and get a sensible lady’s pantsuit in the Oval Office!
