BENEFITING: National Blood Clot Alliance
ORGANIZER: National Blood Clot Alliance
As some of you may or may not know, my mum, Sarah Whitfield, passed away suddenly as a result of a pulmonary embolism, when I was 17. It left a huge void in my life and I'm sure everyone who knew her, as she was the most loving, caring and selfless person you could ever hope to meet or have in your life. I still miss her terribly, but I know that she is looking down and keeping an eye out for us all, especially her grandchildren.
In memory of my mum, and in a bid to raise much needed funds and awareness about something that kills more people every year than AIDS, breast cancer and car accidents combined, I have challenged myself to run the New York Marathon on November 5th. I will be raising money for the National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA).
Those who knew me when I was younger will know that I was more of a sprinter and hated long distance running! So not only will you be donating money to a fantastic cause, but you will be safe in the knowledge that I will be doing something that isn't easy for me and at times will be far from enjoyable (if the training is anything to go by!). I would be extremely grateful if you can support me by making a donation to the NBCA through my page, no matter how small, every little helps. The great thing is, my company, Edrington, has very kindly agreed to double match whatever I raise. So if you donate $50, it will be turned into $150!
About the National Blood Clot Alliance & Team Stop The Clot:
A 501(c)(3), non-profit, voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing the prevention, early diagnosis and successful treatment of life-threatening blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and clot-provoked stroke. NBCA works on behalf of people who may be susceptible to blood clots, including, but not limited to, people with clotting disorders, atrial fibrillation, cancer, traumatic injury, and risks related to surgery, lengthy immobility, child birth and birth control. NBCA accomplishes its mission through programs that build public awareness, educate patients and healthcare professionals, and promote supportive public and private sector policy.
Team Stop The Clot's goal is to raise funds for our mission of education and awareness. As you read their stories you'll learn about their commitment and dedication to raise funds, awareness, train, and run 26.2 miles on November 5th in New York.
The startling blood clot statistics tell it all:
- Blood clots kill more people every year than AIDS, breast cancer, and car accidents combined
- 1 person will die every 6 minutes in the US due to a blood clot
Tragically, too many lives are affected by blood clots, and too many lives are lost because public awareness about life-threatening blood clots is so low.
Blood clots don't discriminate. Regardless of age, race or gender, we are all at risk. No matter how young or physically fit you may be, you can still be affected.
Please donate today to help NBCA save lives as we continue our mission to advance prevention, early diagnosis and successful treatment of life-threatening blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and clot-provoked stroke.
