BENEFITING: National Blood Clot Alliance
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Team Stop the Clot : Five Years Running.
The TCS NYC Marathon’s Team Stop the Clot® is an extraordinarily dedicated Team of 10 new members each year. It's a team of blood clot survivors and those running in memory or in honor of a loved one who was touched by blood clots. Read each of their stories. No doubt, you'll learn something about their commitment and their dedication to fundraise and train to run 26.2 miles on a cool winter day in New York City.
Historically, this Team has surpassed every goal set for them. In 2015, starting with a $30,000 fundraising goal in March, they successfully exceeded their updated $85,000 goal by marathon day. Collectively, the Team reached out to more than 850 donors. Every dollar raised gave them the chance to educate others and raise awareness about blood clots and clotting disorders.
Tragically, too many lives are affected by blood clots, and too many lives are lost because public awareness about life-threatening blood clots is so low. Study after study have shown that fewer than a 1 in 4 people have any recognition of blood clots or their signs and symptoms.
Blood Clots by the Numbers:
- 1 person will die every 6 minutes in the United States due to a blood clot.
- 274 people in the US will die every day due to a blood clot.
- 900,000 new blood clots are diagnosed in the US every year.
- 100,000 deaths due to blood clots in the US every year.
Blood clots affect people from all walks of life. It’s difficult to look at the numbers and not think of the individuals — their families, their friends. It's also difficult to not ask yourself, “Could I be at risk for a blood clot?” The answer most certainly is: Yes. Everyone may be at risk. Blood clots don’t discriminate. They can just as easily affect athletes as well as those less physically fit. They affect men, women and children, too. Blood clots do not discriminate.
Don’t be a statistic. Learn the facts, the signs and symptoms. Blood clots are serious, but they’re also preventable. Find out how to prevent blood clots.
Could this be you? An excerpt of a Team Stop The Clot® application from a 29 year old woman wishing to run the New York Marathon with us. "The only reason I am the one filling out this application, and not some family member who wants to run in my memory, is because I had a physician who was diligent, saw the signs, connected the dots and saved my life. I have since learned that many others are not so fortunate. Education, awareness and research are critical. I want to help make that happen – I want people to learn how to avoid risk factors, learn the signs, and discuss with their doctors. I want doctors to learn how to better detect potential clots and how to mitigate risk factors. I want research to develop better patient care and better drugs. This is a problem we can get ahead of, and the National Blood Clot Alliance is leading the way!"
