THE STORY:

Dear Family and Friends,

I am currently training for the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon which will take place on November 1st. This year I'll be running - not just for the warped enjoyment I get out of it - but to raise funds and awareness for the National Brain Tumor Society.

I've chosen this charity due to impact that brain tumors have had to those close to me. My aunt (and godmother) Carolyn Peterson, and one of my best friends, Antonio Ronga, were both lost to brain tumors after years of courageous fighting.

Both Carolyn and Antonio left lasting impressions on my life, not just from their passing, but due to the spirit and perseverance that they both demonstrated despite being faced with daunting obstacles. They both even maintained a sense of humor throughout their fight, and supported those around them just as much as we all tried to support them.

I like to think that I won't be running this race alone...

A tradition that our family and friends have kept up are Carolyn's memory ribbons. They have prominent spots on our Christmas trees, are hidden on ski mountains and vineyards, have made it through many brain tumor fundraising walks, and have dove out of at least one airplane...

Another tradition among my friends are Antonio's "rubber ducks." Since if you have a duck, you're never alone... A few of my friends have adorned a cheek (and no - not on their face) with a duck tattoo, while rubber ducks have taken up residence all around Antonio's memorial.

I'll have a duck and a ribbon with me on race day. Carolyn and Antonio have inspired me so much, and I'm looking forward to running with them.

About the National Brain Tumor Society:

Today, nearly 700,000 Americans are living with a primary brain tumor, and 69,000 more will be diagnosed this year. With no available cure and limited treatment options, brain tumors dramatically impact the quality of life for all those affected. But all of us have reason to hope for a better prognosis for those living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow.

Driven by a vibrant, hopeful, and tireless community, the National Brain Tumor Society’s strategic initiatives and funded programs aim to improve an understanding of all brain tumors to transform research into new and effective treatments, as quickly as possible. To achieve these goals, we also foster collaboration with leaders in the private sector, government, and academia to drive systemic change within all facets of the drug discovery and development landscape.

The National Brain Tumor Society is the largest nonprofit dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States, and we won’t rest until a cure exists.
