Elevate the human spirit

To elevate impoverished communities and inspire hope and achievement in youth and adults, NCAT is helping to build Centers for Arts and Technology based on Bill Strickland’s highly successful Pittsburgh-based Manchester Bidwell educational model.

National Center for Arts and Technology (NCAT) is a nonprofit affiliate of Manchester Bidwell Corporation (MBC), based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. NCAT works with cities to “replicate” and adapt the Manchester Bidwell education model, which provides adult career-training and youth arts-education programming to a community through the establishment of a Center for Art and Technology (CAT). NCAT’s program design is based on the successful and nationally recognized programs of Pittsburgh-based Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild and Bidwell Training Center. In addition to establishing youth arts programs and adult career-training courses, NCAT encourages each of its Centers for Arts and Technology to develop entrepreneurial ventures designed to support operations. Importantly, each Center for Arts and Technology embodies Manchester Bidwell’s core values—respect, listen, shape, embrace and influence—and philosophies, which are 1) people are assets, not liabilities; 2) environment shapes lives; and 3) creativity fuels enterprise.

NCAT collaborates with a community’s leadership through a multi-phase process designed to develop and open a Center for Arts and Technology. The process begins with the feasibility phase, which involves a due diligence investigation to determine whether the community in consideration possesses the requisite characteristics to successfully build a Center for Arts and Technology. The planning and implementation phase involves program development and operational start-up. Once the Center for Arts and Technology is open, it enters the maintenance phase, during which it becomes an affiliate of NCAT with access to ongoing technical support, training and consultation. NCAT’s process of collaborative consultation allows each community to effectively participate and adapt the Manchester Bidwell educational model to the unique economic, educational, and artistic opportunities that exist in their locale or region.
