Hello, my name is Marisol Larios. As I sit here and think about my running journey, I still cannot think of calling myself a runner. Last year, when I decided to start running, I thought I would fail. I had never liked running! I was that student who dreaded the yearly fitness test just because I did not want to run a mile. I decided to run at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week to better my health. At first I thought I couldn’t even run for that long, but when I went for my first run, I surprised myself!
Since that first run, I have continued to surprise myself with what I’ve been able to accomplish as a runner. At the beginning of this year, I set the goal of completing my first half marathon, and I was in love with running from there on out. I love that I can prove myself wrong and that I can be competitive with myself. After finishing my first half marathon with a better time than I expected, I decided to sign up for my second one and set a new personal record. These goals are what have been keeping me motivated and have taught me discipline in my life.
Now that I’ve crossed those two things of my to-do list, it is time to set a new goal. I have resided in Los Angeles for over a decade and the Los Angeles Marathon is definitely an event that lots of people I know have participated in. Now, in 2015, I will be running my first full marathon in the hopes to check it off my bucket list. However, I want this marathon to be more than just 26.2 miles of running, I want it to mean something. Along with running being introduced to me this past year, so was kidney disease. I have had two people close to me affected by different types of kidney disease and I would love to be an advocate for patients out there. Their drive to keep fighting will be my drive to keep going!
