BENEFITING: National Kidney Foundation, Inc.
ORGANIZER: National Kidney Foundation
EVENT: NATIONAL KIDNEY FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Mar 15, 2015
We run in honor of our brother-in-law, Craig “The Reverend” Shaffer, who has survived two kidney transplants, countless hours of dialysis, and even salt-free living! Craig’s a New Jersey native who has had kidney disease since his 20s. He now teaches high school math in Orlando, Florida. We were so thrilled when my sister, Natalie, married him because he is one of our favorite people in the world. He’s so warm, friendly, funny, and the easiest guy to be around—except when he trash talks you during intense bouts of yard games. :) Craig just takes things as they come and does what he needs to do, with little fanfare and no need for sympathy.
When we received the long-awaited call that Craig was getting his second kidney, it was very emotional for us. Not long after his surgery, the beautiful Abigail Kate was born. Craig now has a new adventure ahead of him: fatherhood! It’s because of organizations like the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) that Craig is thriving. Kidney disease is a particularly grueling disease, and it's never over. Though he’d never say it, we know that Craig has been through a lot. It is our honor to run this marathon to raise money for the NKF. For Craig and for the kid(neys) in all of us, please donate to the cause!
