EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
It's that time of year again - The Pittsburgh Marathon! This year I am going to be running the Pittsburgh Half Marathon to benefit the National Kidney Foundation Serving the Alleghenies.
This year's race is very important to me, being that it is my first race since having knee surgery this past August. The ability to be able to run another race for a charity that means so much to myself and my family, means the world to me.
Whether you have supported me in the past, or this is your first time; you need to know who I these races for. I run for my Mom. She has been dealing with the effects of Chronic Kidney Disease for 7years now. She doesn't let that keep her down though! Not only is she a teacher who goes to school every day, but 3 days a week she has to endure dialysis to maintain her kidney function. I have debated for months on whether I was going to participate in this year's race; but my training program is nothing compared to what she has to go through on a daily basis.
Rewind to April 12, 2016. The day we got the call we have been waiting for since January 2010. They had a kidney for her transplant at AGH! She has officially been on AGH's list since March of 2016 and were absolutely ecstatic. How I managed to get to the hospital from work is beyond me, but I did and then we waited. We waited for 7 hours. At 7 hours, we were told that they could not do the transplant because it was not a perfect match. April 12, 2016 went from being the best day of our lives in a few short moments. My Mom was very calm about the situation, as my Dad and I sat there absolutely furious. She just said "It's ok , it wasn't my time. I'll get one". That day solidifed for me, that my Mom isn't going to give up. She is going to keep on going to dialysis and work every day until we get the call again. We all know that the next time - It's going to be her time!
Thank you so much for letting me share my Mom's story with you and for your continued support!
