EVENT: San Francisco Marathon 2015
EVENT DATE: Jul 26, 2015
Friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances, strangers:
Running hadn't always played a vital role in my life. Over time, it grew into what it is now - a passion, a pastime, a part of who I am. Running was something I did when life was good, but moreover, it was something I turned to when life got rough - when I was in search of a former clarity.
Over the last year, I lost a lot of the peace within myself over a series of events. My father --- my main-man, my look-alike, my go-to-guy for a laugh (and occasional eye roll), my motivation, my inspiration --- was dignosed in February 2014 with renal failure, amongst other ailments. He arrived at heaven's gates minutes past midnight on the morning of Thanksgiving 2014. Leaving little time for my family and I to fully understand his conditions, instead we accepted, adjusted, and grieved. I find consolation in the fact that he is at peace, as I once witnessed his kidneys, lungs, heart, and bones grow delicate by the day. Always appearing collected, but often feeling far much less than whole, at least I can say I am better today. Because now every time I run, I think of my body, my lungs, my heart, and my bones, and I thank them. Understand that, often times, we take things for granted and we forget to show appreciation for what we have, only to realize it's too late. When I run, I think about my dad and how he not only gave me life, but a new outlook on life - to give selflessly to others in any and every meaningfully miniscule way possible.
So here's my opportunity. I ask that you donate to my fundraiser, donate to others', spend time with the ones you love, contemplate your purpose, run, raise awareness, volunteer, cheer. $10, 10 kilometers, 10 minutes. Anything is better than doing nothing. I'm running for the SF Marathon, for Team Kidney, for the work they do, for my family, for myself, for my father, for others like him.
I'm running for a reason, and I hope that my reason inspires you.
