Hoover Elementary is located in Oakland, California. 89% of students at Hoover qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. In class, students are learning about native ecology and regional American Indian culture. During their visit to Muir Woods National Monument, students will gain context to what they are learning. As part of this trip, students will explore the Redwood habitat through the lens of both history and science. Students will use identification cards to locate specific tree species, then discuss the species' cultural significance to native Americans and adaptations that allow them to thrive in this ecosystem.
This gift will help cover bus transportation for 55 4th-grade students to visit Muir Woods National Monument. Every dollar raised will be matched 1-to-1 by the National Park Service Centennial Challenge Fund to cover other fees associated with this trip.
