BENEFITING: The Nature Conservancy
ORGANIZER: The Nature Conservancy
As the child of a TNC State Director and a Sierra Club Chapter Director, I was literally born in to the environmental movement. Growing up wandering through the remarkable natural beauty of Michigan’s forests, beaches and Great Lakes, and being exposed to all the time and hard work that my parents spent trying to preserve them for my children and my children’s children, I couldn’t help but get inspired to stay in the family business (so to speak). But not before a little break.
After wandering the jungles and coastlines of Central and South America as an adventure tour guide, I found my way to the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, where I found my most compelling reason to appreciate the natural world and all it had given me, my wife. Her passion for the environment, especially in and around her home town on the east end of Long Island, has always been infectious, so when we moved back out to the east end, I couldn't help but find myself equally inspired.
The beaches and shoreline of the east end of Long Island are truly spectacular on a world class scale. I feel fortunate every morning that I get to take a jog along a stunning stretch of white sand and, if I’ve decided to forgo the iPod, listen to the sound of the waves and the shorebirds as they rise with the sun and begin to go about their day.
It also serves as a constant reminder of why I consider myself so lucky to work for The Nature Conservancy and dedicate my time and efforts to preserving the natural beauty and resources of the marine and coastal environments, and all that they provide, here on Long Island, as well as throughout New York and the entire Northeast.
Given everything that the natural world has given to me, it seems like a few months of training and a (LOOOOONG) race at the end was quite literally the least I could do to try and give something back. While I know all of you can't join me for a run, I invite anyone who is interested to give me a shout. And in the mean time, please consider donating to the cause to help me reach my goal of $50,000. Thanks so much for your support!
Whether or not you are running the marathon, by joining the cause as a fundraiser and member of Team Nature Conservancy or by pledging funds to a Team Nature Conservancy runner, YOU are an important part of an opportunity to move conservation from the sidelines of global priorities to the center of the world stage - starting with the 2011 New York City Marathon.
When you donate to Team Nature Conservancy, nature and people benefit. Just hit the big, orange DONATE button and you are helping to support the Conservancy's vision to leave a sustainable world for future generations.
Thank you for your support of our natural world and of Team Nature Conservancy!
