In 2001 my son, Jerry, was a kindergartener. He and his classmates had no real knowledge of a pre 9/11 world being so young when it occurred. When he graduated from middle school (8th grade) my husband joked with him about what he was going to do with his life now that he graduated. He, quite seriously, said he wanted to enlist in the military. Shock. Yes both of his grandfathers served during and in Vietnam and there is Military in both families and amongst our friends but we were pretty unprepared for that statement. We started on a journey less than a year later as we were checking out the Coast Guard, Navy and other branches online and found a link to the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps. We took him to an orientation day and he decided in that moment that he wanted to be a Sea Cadet. Flash forward 16 months - he became a "Plank" member of the newly established LT. Michael Murphy Division of the USNSCC. He served in the USNSCC until he graduated high school in 2014. He learned so much from the leaders of this division and his fellow cadets. After a year spent in college - which we convinced him to try so that he could maybe enlist as an officer - he decided, nope! I want to enlist now. May 24, 2016 he graduated Navy boot camp. He is now attending schooling for the rating of ET. He loves it and is extremely pleased with his choice. He said he is exactly where he is meant to be. We are so proud of him for his courage to follow through and his determination to serve his country in the best way that he knows how. He is determined to follow this path as a career. LT. Michael Murphy is his inspiration, USNSCC was his stepping stone. Knowing that anything can happen and no one is ensured of the future they predict, I ask that you donate towards the T2T organization which supports Building for America's Bravest. Never Forget By Doing Good!
