Established in 2005, the John and Michael Neal Foundation for Cancer Research was created as a vehicle to fund some of the top research projects around the globe. In the first six years, the John Neal Memorial Golf Tournament and Benefit has raised over $200,000 for cancer research projects. While many organizations utilize a percentage of every dollar contributed for administrative expenses, the John and Michael Neal Foundation for Cancer Research will pass 100% of every dollar raised directly to top cancer research projects.

During his life, John Neal was a champion for many causes who spent much of his life working to help others. John served on the boards of numerous civic and philanthropic organizations. John always took the attitude that one person can make a difference and if you work hard enough then good things will happen.

As a young parent in 1972, John and his wife Darla lost their son, Michael, to acute lymphocytic leukemia at the tender age of 4. At the time, 96% of all children diagnosed with acute leukemia dies. Through the efforts and accomplishments of doctors and researchers over the years, the mortality rate has changed dramatically. Today, more than 86% of children diagnosed with acute leukemia survive.

In 2002, nearly thirty-two years after Michael was diagnosed with acute leukemia, John went in for a routine physical and was confronted with the news that he had chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Diagnosed with one of the more treatable forms of leukemia, doctors originally thought John’s treatment would be prolonged. Unfortunately, it was discovered that he had an abnormal gene marker that rendered conventional treatments ineffective.

During the ensuing three years, John's son, David, raised over $120,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through their Team in Training program. After David competed in the 2004 King’s Trail Triathlon, John and David started talking about an event that would raise money specifically for cancer research. The original fundraiser was planned for Summer / Fall 2006, but unfortunately John didn't have the opportunity to see the project to fruition.

John passed away in September of 2005. It is our wish that his work and spirit will live on thru this foundation. The John Neal Memorial Golf Tournament serves as the foundation's main fundraising vehicle. The goal is for participants to be able to channel money directly to research specific projects. While most national organizations, such as the American Cancer Society, only dedicate a small percentage to research, the Neal Foundation aspires to send 100% of every dollar raised directly to research. Our goal is to get as much money as possible working on a CURE for these terrible diseases. We have extended the scope of the foundation to cancer research rather, than just leukemia. While those who know and love John have been adversely affected by leukemia, EVERYONE has been affected by cancer.
