On October 7th I will run the Portland Marathon, and I would appreciate your support for Beyond el Campo, an amazing little organization doing big important work. I've been training hard and I hope you can give to keep this project going strong.
This past summer I volunteered for Beyond el Campo, a rural education initiative in a small coffee-growing region in Costa Rica, working with the literacy non-profit Reader to Reader. Beyond el Campo supports literacy and life-long learning through programs at the Biblioteca Pública de Santa Cruz, a small-but-growing public library that offers a variety of vital reading and education projects.
Through the summer, we improved and beautified the library building, hosted English classes, movies, and story and craft times at the library, and ran two-week summer reading workshops. The library has touched the lives of many. Circulation more than doubled over the summer, and happy youngsters buzzed in and out to check out books, read, or work on an art project. A committee of local residents formed to continue and expand the library's crucial reading and community engagement programs.
Beyond el Campo and the Biblioteca Pública need funds to grow and flourish. With more resources, the library can provide more of the popular reading and craft activities for kids that drove circulation this summer, buy more books in popular categories like young adult fiction and self-help, complete crucial building maintenance projects, and pay for a local high schooler to staff the library. Your support will go directly to helping a vital service in a small town that needs its library.
Thank you for your support, and I'll run darned hard,
