Tennis Rocks was started to provide opportunities for at-risk youth and families in Wilmington. One major goal is to combat the high dropout rate of minority high school students, which is at approximately at 65 percent. Tennis Rocks has added a GED program to offer our young adults an opportunity to earn their GED diploma.
Tennis Rocks is located in Wilmington area code 19802, where approximately 75 percent of the children live in poverty, many from single parent homes, and only 5 percent of the adults have a college degree. Rising juvenile crime rates in the city directly correlate to the high dropout rate for minority high school students who live in the city. Truancy and poor academic achievement contribute to the alarmingly low graduation rate, as does gang activity, drug and alcohol dependency, and unhealthy lifestyles.
On January 27, 2016 The Wilmington community advisory council published a report titled, "Accelerating Youth Violence Prevention and Positive Development - A Call for Action", stated that Wilmington youth need improved recreation, education, employment and mental health services, if they are going to avoid becoming victims and perpetrators of gun violence as adults. The council recommends early intervention, ongoing support and coordinated community services for at-risk youth in Wilmington. Recommendations target youth ages 4 to 18, living in high-need neighborhoods inlcude, build up the capacity of organizations such as Tennis Rocks to provide education, visual arts, music, recreation, sports and financial literacy programs.
YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT IS TRULY NEEDED IN ORDER FOR TENNIS ROCKS TO CONTINUE OFFERING THE ABOVE MENTIONED COMMUNITY SERVICES FOR OUR AT-RISK YOUTH AND FAMILIES LIVING IN WILMINGTON AND 19802 AREA.
