BENEFITING: NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSING SERVICES OF LOS ANGELES INC

EVENT DATE: Oct 29, 2016

THE STORY:

Help beautify and revitalize neighborhoods while improving the lives of families in need at Neighborhood Pride Day in South Los Angeles on Saturday, October 29th, 2016! As a part of Neighborhood Pride Day, hundreds of volunteers will paint and make minor home repairs for families and seniors in targeted areas of South Los Angeles. Additional activities include planting residential and community gardens, cleaning up alleys, landscaping, and removing graffiti. The event is a collaborative effort between Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles County, residents, block clubs, businesses, community groups, and volunteers and runs from 8am to noon. Breakfast and lunch are provided to event participants.

The event is made possible because of generous supporters and donors in the community and neighborhood volunteers. Contributions and in-kind donations are critical to hosting the event and any level of support is deeply appreciated. NHS is a 501(c)3 neighborhood revitalization nonprofit and all contributions are tax-deductible. Check out a video of our Pride Day events here:

Pride Day makes a big difference in the lives of people like Shemesha. A mother of two, Shemesha embodies the hard-working drive and irrepressible optimism of the community. In between commuting to Downtown Los Angeles for her job, taking classes to earn her Masters’ in Public Administration, and raising two children, Shemesha bought a house on a quiet street right in the heart of her favorite neighborhood. “I love this neighborhood—it’s quiet, I know my neighbors, and I can leave my door open without worrying. This is where I want my kids growing up.” But between mortgage payments and the expenses that come from raising a 17-year old and an 11-year old, there wasn’t much spare money left to fix up the home. That’s when NHS stepped in with Neighborhood Pride Day, sprucing up Shemesha’s block and revitalizing her corner.

Since 1984, NHS has hosted hundreds of Neighborhood Pride Day events throughout Los Angeles County, developing more than 21,000 housing and commercial units and assisting more than 4 million families with affordable homeownership services. Please join your neighbors as we bring this fun volunteer-driven event to the community while helping low income families improve and revitalize their homes and communities.
