There are a lot of people out there in the world that are struggling to meet their basic needs, and contrary to common perception they are not all in far off places. Our beloved borough of Brooklyn is home to one of the lowest income communities in the United States--the Ocean Hill/Brownsville/Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhoods. As we plan to settle in and grow roots in Brooklyn, we would like to help provide resources to our neighbors in need and ultimately work to transform the social structures that contribute to poverty and hunger in Brooklyn.
Neighbors Together is a Brooklyn-based non profit committed to ending hunger and poverty in the Ocean Hill/Brownsville/Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. The organization fights hunger on three levels: their daily soup kitchen alleviates the immediate crisis by providing meals to more than 400 people a day, their case management services address the struggles that go hand-in-hand with hunger such as unemployment, homelessness and addiction, and their community action program strives to transform the social structures that perpetuate the cycle of poverty.
We think supporting the work of Neighbors Together is a wonderful way to show our love for Brooklyn. Plus, we know the organization is in good hands, because our dear friend Denny Marsh is the Executive Director. We encourage you to visit Neighbors Together's website to learn more, and you're always welcome to pepper Denny with questions at our wedding - just make sure you allow her some time to enjoy herself!
