EIGHTFOLD LOTUS FOUNDATION INC's Fundraiser:

Nepal Earthquake Fund: Food, Water, and Shelter

EIGHTFOLD LOTUS FOUNDATION INC's Photo

THE STORY:

On April 25th, 2015, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck Nepal in 50 miles northwest of the capital city Kathmandu. Four days after the earthquake, the death toll climbed to above 5,200; leaving over 100,000 people homeless. Food, water, shelter, and medicine are in urgent need at this moment. Major international disaster relief organizations are already in Kathmandu and on the search for more survivors, distributing food and medicine to those in need.

On the second day of the earthquake, our emergency response team already flew to Kathmandu to meet up with our local personnels to assess the extent of the disaster. Our team has visited the villagers and interviewed them about how we can best prepare the right services to them, as well as what items they need brought to Nepal.

Our projects will focus on the villages and rural areas between Kathmandu and Lamjung, and between Kathmandu and Lamabagar. Eightfold Lotus Foundation has been officially working on projects of food, clothing, and shoes distribution to the area since 2011, however the history of sponsorship and related donor support of the monasteries and schools in Nepal and India originates from before the 1980s.

In light of the recent disaster, we have now allocated our projects into three categories: emergency relief, post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, and long term care programs.

Emergency relief
We are preparing 10,000 emergency food bags, emergency water filters, and tents.
Emergency food bags: We will buy the food locally and pack with our local staffs and volunteers to avoid congestion at the airport. This also protects the local vendors from going out of business when tonnes of food gets brought in by the international organizations. Each bag can provide a meal a day for 30 days.
Emergency water filters: It seems we are still able to find water supply from underground and mountain water. However, due to the earthquake, many of the water supply is filled with mud, so we need to bring the emergency filters to provide clean water.
Tents: Most importantly, the disaster victims need tents. Many of their homes have been destroyed, and there remains the fear of another earthquake striking again. Many people are now sleeping on the open ground without shelter. We are working with the local communities to provide temporary work relief to make tents. This way, we provide temporary job opportunities as well as providing tents to the communities as needed.
