In response to the devastating earthquake in Nepal, Beyond the Four Walls (B4W) is raising funds to provide direct and immediate emergency care for the B4W community of young women, girls and their families in Bhaktapur, Nepal. As one of the historic religious centers in Nepal, Bhaktapur’s aging structures and infrastructure collapsed in the earthquake and half of all homes in the city were demolished. B4W, headquartered in Bhaktapur, will set up a temporary emergency tent shelter hub with sustainable, off-the-grid infrastructure to provide a safe and sanitary refuge for our families. We will also move our Bhaktapur technology hub to the tent shelter hub, providing families and their friends a safe place to use computers for tracking family and friends.
B4W was established in 2012 to provide at-risk girls a safe environment for learning technology skills as a means to escape abuse (forced marriage, sex trafficking and physical abuse). By 2015, B4W provided services to more than 50 young women and girls. In April 2015, B4W Bhaktapur headquarters provided services to 50 young women and girls on a regular basis. Consistent with our mission to provide a safe environment for young women and girls, we are currently reaching out to locate the girls and their families in our Bhaktapur community, learn about their condition and inventory their immediate needs for shelter, food, medical care and other emergency items.
Providing immediate emergency relief resonates with B4W’s mission because the rate of exploitation immediately following the wake of natural disasters significantly spikes, with young women and girls vulnerable to sex traffickers. Offering safe shelter, a community of caring families and other emergency necessities will be an instrumental factor to ensure that the girls are not prey to traffickers who often promise poor families a safe passage for their girls to other countries.
Wolf Price, a good friend and founder of B4W, is currently residing in Palo Alto and will travel to Nepal on May 19th. Myself and a close friend will be heading over June 2nd. Upon Wolf's arrival in Nepal, he will immediately travel to Bhaktapur and set up a tent shelter hub for the B4W families with the supplies listed below. The donations for the B4W Bhaktapur Emergency Fund will be invested immediately with no administrative or other overhead withdrawn from the funds, therefore providing significantly greater immediate and personal impact than the capacity of traditional aid organizations. Although traditional aid agencies will be instrumental in Nepal’s recovery, the B4W aid is tailored to the particular needs of our families with a goal of creating a safety network of families that will live together in the tent shelter until more permanent solutions are provided.
