My two biggest passions in life are music and genuine connections. This three-week volunteer trip will allow me to combine and act on these passions in order to serve Nepali women and children. I've worked for two years to provide music education to these children, and I long to see that change and contribute firsthand. I will be playing music for and with the children, installing sustainable cookstoves for women, and assisting in every way possible at four different music schools and programs. Your support will go toward travel expenses, in-country expenses, and the costs of rent and unpaid time while I’m away. Any money raised beyond my set goal will go directly toward the work of the Aura Imports Sponsorship Project (aiSP)! AiSP is an independent non-governmental organization that promotes education for impoverished children in Nepal, India and Tibet, giving them the tools and opportunities necessary for success.
I plan to travel with my friend and colleague, William Aura, aiSP Founder and Asian Programs Coordinator at the Playing For Change Foundation (PFCF). PFCF is a non-profit organization creating positive change through music and arts education. In 2009, aiSP built a school in remote Tintale Village, Nepal, and joined with PFCF to bring music education to Tintale United Academy. This past year, the partnership enabled the addition of two new rooms to the school, providing an expansion of the music program as well as a cyber-café. Because of these two organizations, Tintale has solar power, computers and regular connection to the Internet for the first time!
During this trip, I will visit Tintale United Academy in addition to three other Playing For Change Foundation music schools and programs throughout Nepal. As a musician, I will lead workshops for the children and serve as a mentor and strong role model for the female students especially. In the spirit of exchange, I also hope to learn as much as possible from them to gain a greater understanding of the Nepali culture and share my knowledge with all of you.
Additionally, I will help to install new cookstoves for the village women, whose current stoves are inefficient and unsafe. These women spend hours per day collecting firewood, walking long distances with an unbelievable load on their backs, and then breathing in smoke while cooking. Inhaling acrid smoke and fine particulates is the cause of nearly two million deaths a year worldwide, and unfortunately this is a part of daily life for people in remote Tintale Village. Exposure to these toxic fumes is greatest among women and young children, who spend the most time near open fires or traditional cookstoves tending to the family meal, or, in the case of young students, studying by the weak light of an open flame.
Aura Imports Sponsorship Project has partnered with Prakti Design, a cookstove developer, manufacturer and distributor committed to combating threatening respiratory diseases, poverty, and gender inequality while contributing to environmental sustainability. Our first round of installations will be for contributing members of the anti-trafficking educational collective known as the Mother's Society. Through the generosity of inspired individuals, we now have 26 cookstoves pledged for the women in Tintale Village. Our goal is to provide at least 37 cookstoves, one for each woman in the Mother’s Society.
