THE STORY:

As many of you know, I have spent a little time in Nepal and have friends there who, while personally okay, are from villages where their families have lost everything. Before the earthquake, Nepal, one of the most beautiful places on earth, was also one of the poorest. Even in Kathmandu or the villages on its outskirts, people live in mud brick houses, sometimes with thatched roofs. Those and the oldest capital of Nepal, Bhaktapur, have essentially been destroyed. Below are excerpts from our correspondence:

“My fellow village people are facing severe short of tents, covering plastic, food stuffs, medicine or monetary as 98% of house in my village has collapsed on this devastating quake.”

“Things are really bad, people are struggling to get a tent, clean drinking water, hygienic foods, warm clothes and medicine. And these are the things we are in severe shortage.”

Suffice it to say that, while aid agencies are on the way, it is difficult to direct anyone to specific villages. In order to help, some of us are collecting funds to purchase supplies to send them directly to my friends at Austravel in Kathmandu for distribution in their villages, or alternatively to create a fund to help monetarily. At this time, we are investigating logistics which are difficult at best, and do not know exactly what the plan will be. These people, however, can use any help that we can give them. If you would like to participate, please send whatever donation you are inclined to make.

Thank you for your consideration.
