BENEFITING: SOCIETY FOR ADOLESCENT HEALTH AND MEDICINE
Reports of both recent and remote sexual misconduct, abuse, and assault at several New England boarding schools is causing increased scrutiny on them and their numerous peer institutions. There is concern that, in response, some schools are developing policies regarding the reporting of “underage” sexual activity on campus that could hinder the ability of students to seek confidential reproductive health care. NERC-SAHM has the important opportunity to commission renown experts from the Center for Adolescent Health and the Law and the National Center for Youth Law to draft a guide to the legal and ethical considerations relating to “underage” sexual activity for healthcare providers who work with this population. At the recent New England Regional Chapter Luncheon held during the SAHM Meeting in Washington, DC, several members offered donations to help defray the costs of creating such a resource. If the response is adequate, the NERC-SAHM Executive Committee will authorize use of Chapter reserve account funds to contract with the Centers. Please pledge by May 6, 2016 so that we might move this important initiative forward.
